Albert Haynesworth Wants a Trade, and Nothing Else

Albert Haynesworth will not be at the Redskins’ Organized Team Activities (OTAs), nor does he plan on going to any voluntary workouts according to Jason La Canfora of the NFL Network.

“Haynesworth, who remains hopeful of a trade after just one season in Washington, will only attend mandatory offseason activities.” La Canfora states.

It has been heavily speculated that the Skins would love more than trade away Haynesworth and his overpriced contract before or during the draft weekend, despite paying him a $21 million bonus at the beginning of this month…go ahead and say it….”wow!”

It was only a year ago when Redskin fans were jumping up and down with the signing of this potential game changer, only to see very little production from him last season. Haynesworth was quickly labeled as out-of-shape and lazy before midseason.

And now he’s being asked to play nose tackle in Jim Haslett’s 3-4 scheme. A scheme that requires the nose tackle to take on double teams on a consistent basis. Wait…you want the lazy out of shape guy to do that every play? Of course he doesn’t want to do that!

For those of you who aren’t familiar with the 3-4 defensive line, I’ll quickly school you. Obviously, instead of four defensive linemen, you only have three. The key is to have those three guys be pretty damn big, because their job is to stop the run (whereas your outside linebackers are the pass rushers, ala Demarcus Ware or Shawn Merriman). So I can see why head coach Mike Shannahan and defensive coordinator, Jim Haslett, wants someone as big as Haynesworth in the middle of the three biggest men on your team…but Haynesworth would rather not.

And I guess that $100 million contract won’t make him do it neither.

The Tennesee Titans, Haynesworth’s former team, as well as the Detroit Lions, where Haynesworth’s former defensive coordinator now coaches, are both teams that he can wind up being traded to.

The Redskins sought a third-round draft pick when they shopped Haynesworth before picking up the option, according to a league source, at a time when another team would have had to pay him the bonus. Now, with Haynesworth's remaining salary more manageable, the Redskins hope to receive a second-round pick for him.

The Titans don't have a second-round pick in 2010, and the Lions' second-round pick is very high, which could complicate things, but the potential for a deal is still there.

Redskins sources also wouldn't be surprised if the team shopped safety LaRon Landry and defensive end Andre Carter before the draft, looking to add picks to their limited 2010 selections (they lack second- and third-round picks). The Redskins also are allowing quarterback Jason Campbell to pursue a trade, although receiving more than a fifth-round pick for him could be difficult after the team acquired Donovan McNabb from the Philadelphia Eagles earlier this month.

  1. The titans don't want him back. He went for the money. If he wanted anything other than just money he would of stayed with the Titans and now that he's got the money, he doesn't care. Big alberts career is on hiatus until
    it's contract time again.

  2. Actually, he was reportedly offered more money by Tampa before he signed with the Skins. I wouldn't be surprised if he went back to the Titans, but my money is on Detroit first.

  3. What type of money did Tampa offer though? From what I saw the skins offered a more loaded front end, exactly what Albert wanted. Detroit would
be a great fit. He knows the scheme that Shwartz runs and with Vandenbosch there already it would make sense.

  4. They never went into specifics. He was on the local DC ESPN radio show and was asked if he simply went with the biggest contract. He then stated that Tampa offered him $10 million more. Not sure if it was front ended or balanaced tho.
